Wānaka Airport Future Review

In July 2024 as part of LTP consultation, QLDC signalled its intent to begin a process to develop a long term plan for the Wānaka airport. This page provides information about the process and will be updated regularly as the work progresses.

Overview

The future of the airport is an important topic for the district and it’s essential that the community, and Wānaka-Upper Clutha locals in particular, is part of shaping it.

There are many key questions to consider as the review progresses:

  • What is the community and stakeholder vision for Wānaka Airport?

  • How can we ensure engagement with the community on this important topic is effective?

  • What technical analysis is required before we consider potential scenarios? Economic, Social, Commercial, Environmental, etc.

  • What are the potential scenarios and what could future management look like?

What to expect

In April 2025, we completed an open market procurement process and as a result appointed global advisory Egis NZ (part of the Egis Global Group) to facilitate the development of a vision and potential future scenarios for Wānaka Airport. Egis has dedicated teams throughout New Zealand bringing relevant sector expertise and advisory services. The Egis Group has experience in managing 20 airports worldwide and is committed to delivering projects that drive social, economic, and environmental benefits for local communities.

Egis presented their team and a high-level overview of their approach to the development programme to the elected Council at a public workshop on Tuesday 15 April.

Egis has undertaken the first round of engagement and is in the process of seeking feedback on the developed scenarios with the community through further engagement.

Working with the community

This proposed process is intended to involve extensive engagement with key stakeholders, the Wānaka-Upper Clutha community and wider Queenstown Lakes District. At a high level this includes three stages:

  • Assessments

  • Engagement

  • Analysis & Outputs

See below for a high-level timeline for the programme.

    • Technical and Operational Assessments

    • Regulatory Assessments
