Upper Clutha Wastewater Conveyance Scheme
The new scheme will pump wastewater from Domain Road in Hāwea to the existing Project Pure wastewater treatment plant via Albert Town for treatment and disposal, responding to and futureproofing Hāwea’s wastewater needs.
Quick links
About the project
The Upper Clutha Wastewater Conveyance Scheme will respond to and futureproof Hāwea’s wastewater needs.
The existing Hāwea Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) was built in 1988 and subsequently upgraded in 2000. However, the Hāwea WWTP now does not have sufficient capacity to accommodate the increasing wastewater flows from the township.
Over the past 24 months, Council has been investigating options for treating and disposing of wastewater from Hāwea while simultaneously completing an interim upgrade of the existing plant.
The objectives of the Upper Clutha Wastewater Conveyance Scheme project are as follows:
-
Futureproof: Provide a solution with a minimum 30-year design life.
-
Environmental wellbeing: Minimise contaminants from entering the natural environment over the life of the wastewater treatment and disposal solution. If possible, this will include regeneration of the natural environment.
-
Social wellbeing: Manage visual and amenity effects over the life of the solution.
The new scheme will pump wastewater from Domain Road in Hāwea to the existing Project Pure wastewater treatment plant via Albert Town for treatment and disposal. A new pipeline would be installed between Hāwea and Albert Town, where it would then connect into Wānaka’s wastewater scheme.
This solution was selected because it provides the best balance of environmental, social, cost and resilience benefits.
Project scope
Broadly, the Upper Clutha Wastewater Conveyance Scheme project will include the following work:
-
Decommission the Hāwea WWTP
-
Construct a new pump station at Domain Road
-
Install a single 12.5km 315mm pipeline from Domain Road to Albert Town No. 2 WWPS
-
Upgrade Albert Town No. 2 WWPS
-
Upgrade Riverbank Road WWPS
-
Install a single 7.4km 630 mm pipeline from Riverbank Road WWPS to Project Pure WWTP
-
Upgrade Project Pure WWTP inlet works.
What's the latest?
30 June 2023
We have completed roadside investigations into existing pipelines between Lake Hāwea, Albert Town and Wānaka Airport to help inform the design of new wastewater infrastructure in the area.
We'll share more information on next steps for this project soon!
