Kā Huanui a Tāhuna
Kā Huanui a Tāhuna is the name of the Whakatipu Transport Programme Alliance, delivering a range of capital projects on behalf of Queenstown Lakes District Council and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.

Kā Huanui a Tāhuna
In November 2020 a partnership was established between Queenstown Lakes District Council and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, along with four design and construction companies; Beca, WSP, Downer New Zealand and Fulton Hogan to deliver a number of cornerstone projects for Queenstown.
The goal is to deliver infrastructure that:

improves safety and accessibility

enables an improved public transport system
-
provides more options for walking and cycling
-
benefits the community and its visitors
Kā Huanui a Tāhuna is governed by a board made up of representatives of each of the organisations involved, along with representation from mana whenua.
The story of our name
The name Kā Huanui a Tāhuna was gifted to the alliance by mana whenua to encapsulate the significance of this union and the projects that will be delivered.
Huanui is the word used by Kāi Tahu to describe pathways and roads. Tāhuna is the original name for the ancient settlement that is now overlain with the urban form of Queenstown.
Kā Huanui a Tāhuna can be variously translated as:
The pathways of Tāhuna * The great outcomes of Tāhuna * The many fruits of Tāhuna.

Beach Street is open and welcoming thousands of visitors over January. The first new trees will be planted in the new year. (Dec-21)

Park Street now supports better walking and cycling connections between the Frankton Track and town centre with an expansive five metre shared path. Approximately 50 parking spaces have also been reintroduced. (Dec-21)

Installation of new water, wastewater and stormwater lines through the Camp/Memorial/Man Street roundabout has been completed. We have also completed a new water connection at the intersection of Man Street and Brecon Street. (Dec-21)

The first section of the generous five metre wide shared path along the eastern side of Brecon Street is now complete, three months ahead of programme. Approximately 50 parking spaces will be available for use on Brecon Street until works begin again on 10 January 2022. (Dec-21)

New retaining wall on upper Brecon Street. The purpose of the retaining wall is to build two generous paths that safely separate mountain bikers from pedestrians at the top of Brecon Street. (Oct-21)

Spaghetti junction - the new stormwater and water pipes installed at the Man St intersection have literally been woven between 35 other pipes under the ground.(Oct-21)

Park Street has reopened to traffic and parking. The wide footpaths create a safe environment for walking and cycling. There are still a few finishing touches to complete in Spring, such as planting garden beds, installation of street furniture and a balustrade along the western side of the street. (July 22)

Productivity plus! The Lakeview subcontractor crews making the most of the fine weather! The closest excavator is undertaking bulk earthworks for a Retaining Wall. The middle excavator is removing the old water main and the back excavator is installing the trunk sewer and water main.
