Solid Waste Assessment

Te whakahaerenga para totoka

Queenstown Lakes District Council commissions a waste assessment for the district every three years.

About the Solid Waste Assessment

This assessment includes:

  • A six-day sort-and-weigh compositional audit of kerbside rubbish and recycling in the district.

  • Two four-day visual composition surveys of solid waste disposed of at Council’s Frankton and Wanaka refuse transfer stations (RTS) and Victoria Flats Landfill.

These audits and surveys are based on the methodologies recommended by the Ministry for the Environment’s Solid Waste Analysis Protocol 2002 (SWAP) and are undertaken to:

  • Assess the amount and composition of waste produced in the district.

  • Monitor changes in the waste stream over time.

  • Assess the effectiveness of existing waste initiatives and identify new waste minimisation initiatives.

  • Inform the development of our waste Minimisation and Management Plan.

The most recent Solid waste assessment was finalised in March 2024 and the results are provided in the below document (Analysis of the Composition of Solid Waste in Queenstown Lakes District, March 2024).
