Upgraded Two Mile UV Treatment Plant

Delivery of an upgraded UV water treatment solution at the Two Mile intake near Sunshine Bay.

About the project

In response to the cryptosporidium outbreak that affected Queenstown’s water supply back in October 2023, we installed a temporary UV treatment solution at Fernhill Reservoir above the Two Mile water intake to provide safe drinking water in the area.

Now, we’re working to install a more permanent and larger UV treatment plant, which will be located next to the Two Mile intake and Sunshine Bay Trail and ensure drinking water in Queenstown, Fernhill, and Sunshine Bay remains safe and compliant.

Once installation is complete, the temporary UV treatment solution used by Fernhill Reservoir will be redeployed elsewhere in the district.

Work will be carried out by Fulton Hogan, with assistance from Veolia.

The temporary detour around the construction site is now open, and Sunshine Bay Track can be accessed by pedestrians from the Queenstown end.

What to expect

As with any construction project, there will be some disruption while work is undertaken. This is likely to include some noise, vibration, and construction machinery movements in the area, but these will be minimised as much as possible.

The temporary detour for Sunshine Bay Track users around the construction site is open again, after lake levels dropped and the detour was inspected on Friday 20 September 2024.

Construction dates

Work will begin on Monday 24 June 2024 and is expected to take approximately six months to complete, finishing in December 2024.
